Home Diaries | Work from Home Setup

Updated: May 23, 2020

Whether you are working from home due to whatever your situation, you should set yourself up for success by preparing your work from home space to be the most productive:

  1. Physical space

  2. Equipment/Tools.

  3. Schedule

If there's somethings missing on the list, please comment below. However to keep it short and simple, I just wanted to list the top 3.

Physical Space

  • Where will your office space be?

Find a separate room for your office...the more isolated, the better however, let's be real...

BEDROOM | Choose a section in your room away from the place where you relax and sleep. My work station is in my bedroom and it is facing against the wall away from my bed and other distractions.

COMMON AREA | Sometimes you need to use the common area in your space, that works too but create a clear space dedicated to work. Also if you live with other people, let them know that this space will be occupied due to your job and to be respectful during those hours.

Do you have the proper office furniture?

Desk and Chair | Yes, having a regular chair and table/desk. Keep it minimal to avoid distraction, and enough lighting. My desk is next to my window so I know what time of day it is. Also other optional items:

  • plants (if you are next to the window)

  • Notepad/pens (taking notes during calls or email)

  • exercise ball (need to take a break from the chair)

  • Air Diffuser (certain scent keeps me going)

  • Food | Healthy snacks and water (I have almonds and cashews)*

*Surprisingly, not having snacks around, you could waste so much time looking for food and end up eating unhealthy.

*This is a couch that converts in to a bed, it divides my bedroom from the relaxation side from my workstation side. Sometimes in order to keep from working is a physical divide.

Equipment/Tool

What is the minimum equipment needed to do your work?

  • Laptop/mouse (yes, you will take forever with a mousepad! I know, I tried it)

  • Cellphone (need to call someone or check something separate)

  • keep it simple!

Schedule

When working from home, are you hourly or salary or self employed?

Hourly and Salary | Depending on your company contract, if you have a strict 8 hours work day with one hour lunch.

  • Create a task list of what is priority

  • Have a timer

  • Set alarm for beginning, lunch and end of your day

Self Employed/Freelance project/others | So you're thinking, I am my own boss so I don't have to worry about the 8 hours but no...you can easily become less productive and hard to know if you were productive.

  • Choose how many hours in a day do you want to dedicate your project on each day

  • Choose a set time for lunch and other breaks

  • Create a task list/goals of what you want to complete by the end of day

Photo is after day 5 | Be careful, you start adding more items and clutter can become a distraction.

Luckily for our company, most everything is web-based and we were working on laptops. Your office should provide you with any tools/equipment you need such as extra screen or keyboard.

**In my case, it was only yesterday (March 13, 2020 to be exact right before my birthday) that Donald Trump announced that the COVID19 (Coronavirus) was a National Emergency. Then it didn't take long before LA mayor Garcetti followed suite with the safer at Home policy. Then on March 23, 2020, we were scheduled to work at home. I"m not expert and this is just what I found worked for me. Please share your routine but having a routine is important when working from home. Stay home and be safe! #stayhome #staysafe #staystrong #stayproductive
